Letter 349: From Mental to Mallampati
First of all, my apologies. I am sincerely sorry, especially to dear Uncle KP to whom I promised I will steer clear of offensive four-letter words on my blog, but there is just no other way to put it: I am mind-fucked.
(And, as vulgar as it may sound, Mallampati is not an expletive.)
See, I used to love Psych as a 4th year student. Now, I find it too emotionally distressing.
I cannot start my mornings with sunshine being sucked out of my day's existence by the Catatonic Depression who is always crying (or is on the verge of crying) during ward rounds, and who refuses to engage in any conversation or eye contact.
I cannot bear to watch a "grab and jab" scene involving straitjackets and burly security, nor can I stand seeing a patient plea and cry and beg us not to detain her while her doctor stood watching, unfazed and stoic, probably formulating a multi-axial assessment of his patient behind those penetrating cold blue eyes.

Last weekend in the ED, I encountered a surge of transference from the patient so intense, that the registrar had to motion for me to leave the room with a discreet wave of his hand, because he had noticed my shifting uneasily in the chair throughout the interview. I swear, when the patient threatened to throw up, I felt a wave of nausea hitting me too.
A few minutes later, when the Reg stepped out of the room, I remember asking him, "How can you do this, day in, day out, for the rest of your life??"
I know for sure I won't be able to withstand the emotional twaddle and psychobabble heaped upon my sanity 24/7. Give me the blood and gore of medicine any time! And yes, even Anesthetics-- the field of medicine where one's job is to put patients to sleep-- looks appealing (go have your anesthetic induction here. IT'S DAMN HILARIOUS! By the end of it, you'd be able to pronounce "je t'aime" like a Frenchman ;>).
I can't wait to end Sixth Year with Anesthetics next week ;P
